CHUCK NORRIS: MISSING IN ACTION (1984) – Reel Action!

It’s hard to believe, but here on REEL ACTION, this is our first foray into the wild and wonderful world of The Cannon Group. Founded by Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, Cannon were the kings of eighties B-movie action flicks, and by far their biggest star was the one and only Chuck Norris. In the early eighties, James Cameron and Sylvester Stallone’s script for what would become RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART 2 was making the rounds, and Cannon did their version with two back-to-back MISSING IN ACTION movies starring Chuck Norris as James Braddock. Originally, MISSING IN ACTION 2: THE BEGINNING, which was released as a prequel in 1985, was due to come out first, but when the movies were turned in it was obvious the first film was far superior, so it hit theaters, and for a while was one of the biggest grossing independent movies of all time. Join us as we dig into the fun action flick, a personal favorite of series host Travis Hopson.

Thank God for subtitles. The narration on this is about as coherent as someone mumbling in their sleep.

Chuck Norris took over when Bruce Lee passed on. Chuck is real he was in the air force and studied karate and competed. Won to! Then started making great movies. Then came the rest after him. He is top dog and will always be I still watch Walker Texas Ranger.

"There was resentment toward the returning soldiers" hasn't this stuff debunked, or at least classified as "It wasn't the hippies spitting on soldiers"? Ugh. That said, this movie was cool for what it was, at it's time. Rewatched recently, it is REALLY rough on stunt coordination, and I never remembered the plot being that anorexic, but damn. Norris films never had satisfying endings.

Another reason they released MIA before MIA2 was that they knew Rambo II was on the way and they wanted to get MIA into the theaters first, so it wouldn't be considered a cheap Rambo copy. Both movies were based on the same script, as pointed out in the video.

In England back in the early/mid '80s VHS tape rentals were the big thing with kids. My childhood was a string of crazy action movies like MIA, and a lot of horror. I probably saw everything. Missing in Action is definitely a classic of the time, and Chuck Norris just seemed like so much more of a hard ass than Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Van Damme. Plus, he seemed very American. Stallone never seemed that American to kid me, and the other big two clearly were not. If you asked a kid in my school to name an American, I bet Chuck Norris would be the most common name. The media, of course, hated all the violent action films corrupting the kids and leading to violence (video games had not won that title yet). Best advertising Mr Norris ever got.
